Day 26-Help me do it myself
Whoever refers to children as "poor helpless creatures" has not really worked with them perhaps. If there is one thing you will understand if you observe children is that , they try relentlessly to learn and pick up things that they want to . Have you tried doing something for a child? Did he pushed your hand away?It is his way of saying ..Help me to do it myself.
But we adults do not have the patience. We want to do everything for the child. And then when they grow up we complain of their poor motor skills or their laziness. We call it "attitude" . We call it "horrible".
It is a lot easier for us to do various things for children-feed them, dress them up, put their shoes on, tie their laces, If it would be possible, we would like to eat and sleep for them as well. Many a times children show us their unhappiness when we do something like this..the most common being pushing our hand away or refusing to do something a certain way.
Little children of 2 -4 years will show this vehemently. They will throw things, grab things, squeeze things...we think this is a destructive tendency. What they are actually trying to do is to feel things and see how that material responds to their touch. Something speaks to these children that we as adults do not understand.
So what do we adults need to do? Trust that the child is working on his own development. Guide...DO NOT DO his work. Show the way to do it and leave the learning to the child.
