Day 54- Mirage
By the banks of the icy cold river , was a little cottage and in it lived the girl with the most gorgeous big brown eyes.Anybody who saw her first would however notice her luscious curls that would fall like springs on her skinny frame. Something that would normally be considered a blessing, but for her mother it was one big chore-brushing and braiding that thick hair every morning and evening would mean spending that extra time which was not the luxury she had. Her mother had so much work to do at the field and after alll of that hard work, she was just able to make ends meet.
The girl too had an important job to do. Apart from all the household work when mother was away, she also had to take care of her baby brother who was blissfully unaware of all the burdens of the family and was only interested in playing pranks and causing trouble.
One day while the girl was collecting firewood from the nearby forest, she found a treasure, a beautiful pink lace ribbon. Wonder who is it that had missed it there and was sobbing their hearts away at a loss as big as this she thought, while secretly thanking God for rewarding her. She had been the "good girl" all her life after all and it was God's way of smiling at her.
She ran to her house and placed the ribbon in a little tin box that she kept by her bedside...a collection of all things precious that she ever owned. In it were- an oval white perfectly smooth pebble, a small butterfly elastic that was broken (but hey, it was a precious butterfly with some blue stones and some dents without stones), a strand of wool that was in the shade of the most magical, dreamy purple and a pressed brown leaf that was in the perfect shape of a heart.
Everyday she would open the box before going to bed and thank God for all the precious gifts, secretly planning on that special day when she would ask mama to tie the ribbon around her gorgeous braid in a bow. This ribbon was fit for princesses she thought.
The special day was tomorrow-the day when she and mama would walk up to the nearby village to sell their little produce, and buy some essential stuff for the house. She would meet her friends there and show off her treasure . Oh how she wanted to capture that expression in her friends' eyes or the "O" their mouths would make in astonishment!!
Her baby brother usually slept right next to her and was always upto some or the other mischief like drawing a moustache when she was asleep, or tying her legs when none was watching. He would have a hearty laugh when his big sister realised much later during the day, black powder smeared under her nose or when she tripped and fell as she got up from the bed.
But she didn't mind all these pranks. He was her lovely brother after all..and one must always be grateful for kith and kin , as her mama always said!
She woke up that day, with a flicker of excitement in her eyes and checked if her hands and legs were tied and they weren't. She touched her face to check for charcoal but there wasn't any.It was a special day after all. Thank you God!
She ran to get ready for the day and as she passed that broken mirror that was hung in her house, she noticed something ....something that she wished she didn't notice. Where was that long beautiful hair now? Was she dreaming? "Oh God..let this be a dream" she thought, and pinched herself.
Tears rolled down her eyes and she ran to fall on her mama's lap and cry her heart out.
Mama was busy packing their produce and mentally calculating how much deficit she had to manage this month. She looked at her daughter's face and said..."Good..one work less. Hurry up..we have a lot to do!"
