Day 59-"Average"

Have you participated in competitions in school/college? Have you ever come SECOND ? The pain of that is something only" the runner up all her life" will understand. The thing is if you come first you will always be celebrated...even if you don't make it to the booze medal, people may talk about you..about how you just missed securing a place in the top three. But the pain of coming second...god! You are neither here..nor there..You are not great..you are "not bad" and what a pain it is to be branded "not bad". No one cares about the "not bad".
Look at the classroom situation. The first rank holder is the apple of the teacher's eye. The person who fails is always sitting next to the teacher(because after all it is her reputation that is at stake).The second rank holder works all his freaking life trying to beat the first rank holder and is never even bothered about.
The first child of the house is obviously celebrated especially by the mother, because this child is often a testament of the woman's fertility. The last child is the father's favourite because this time it is a proof of his manliness. The second one? Well...yes...the second one id just one of them!
The second job..the second girlfriend..the second house...the second idea...the second place...noone remembers them and the feeling of not being remembered...is one of the most painful.

Day 34-Why Education?

I come from a country that has proven , time and again that in order to be successful, education may not be necessary. I have seen way too many men who haven't been educated but have made shit loads of money. So why be educated? Is education a tool to having a career/making money/securing a successful partner/making a name in the society? If that is so, why not teach children in schools ONLY about Physics and Maths and Chemistry and may be a bit of money management? Why do we teach Art and craft? Why do we want children to participate in the million activities-drama, dance, music, elocution and all of that importance we lay on extra curricular activities? Why help children acquire good handwriting? Why show them to appreciate music and art? No matter how hard I think, I go back to Montessori's answer-that one theory that is the basis of the Montessori principle-EDUCATION AS AN AID TO LIFE. Day 17-Mediocrity-is the name of the game

Of the many lessons that I have learnt after a few years of working in the corporate world and a few others in education, I have come to realise something about this nation that disturbs me. I use the word Nation and not the world because I do not know about the other races and so I refrain from giving my opinion on them. In case you have been fortunate enough to have an extremely talented person as a relative or a friend or if that person happens to be you-someone who wouldn't settle for anything less than excellence, you might have noticed that these people are usually what the society would call "unsuccessful" or "unpopular".
