Day 82-Doctor or Engineer?

There is a lot of debate in my state and at home about a girl who has committed suicide because she was unable to get a medical seat inspite of scoring high marks in her board examinations(but secured extremely low marks in a common aptitude test). The problem is now political and everyone is debating about how the Government must take responsibility for her death. I live in a colourful country and state and my people are extremely funny so as to make every problem a political issue.
But I am wondering about the state of the educational system in this country. This system of rote learning where the person's academic brilliance is gauged purely on one's ability to "remember' rather than "assimilate". Lest do people understand that professional courses require a certain aptitude and only based on that should a person be given a seat rather than his ability to memorise facts. What is the implication btw? Imagine an engineer who graduates from some college in the corner of the street and is not able to either analyse or solve a real time problem? Isn't this a serious implication for the people?
Who is going to change the face of the educational system of this country? When will MERIT take precedence over caste/religion/hundred other excuses to bring down the quality of living? How long are we going to pay the price for a class/society of people who were oppressed centuries back and are still enjoying the benefit of "excuse for bad quality"?When will people stop glorifying the "medicine" and "engineering" degrees? When will our engineers be able to read blueprints? When will our doctors be able to diagnose issues without asking for a CT scan for a normal headache?
Is there hope?
